Frédéric Chopin
4 Ballades · 4 Scherzi
Bernd Glemser, piano
The Four Ballades and their sister works, the Four
Scherzos, gave Frédéric Chopin maximum freedom
for formal development as well as much opportunity
to suggest concealed meaning, which audiences were
more than willing to argue about.
In any event, Chopin’s works were not intended as
pure aesthetic pleasantries. He composed the Scherzo
No. 1 in the year of the 1830 Revolution, for example.
Writing at this time, he said, “If I could, I would
set all tones in motion that my uncontrolled, furious,
tempestuous feelings inspire in me!”
But this cycle also contains intimate and mild
tones. Written between 1830 and 1842, there is musical
meaning in all passages of pianistic virtuosity; this
is what raises the Ballades and Scherzos far above the
level of brilliant musical trickery.
For the first time, Bernd Glemser performs solo
works by Chopin on CD.
