Concerto No. 1 for Piano, String Orchestra and Trumpet in C minor
String Quartet No. 8 in C minor op. 110
Prelude in C major for Piano · Prelude in C major (version for string orchestra)
Festival Strings Lucerne · Achim Fiedler, conductor
Bernd Glemser, piano · Reinhold Friedrich, trumpet
The soloist of the new CD of the Festival Strings Lucerne under its GMD Achim Fiedler is a pianist who has just joined the OehmsClassics label, and whose first CD with OehmsClassics has become an exceptional success. Bernd Glemser’s Rachmaninoff album has been unanimously met with enthusiastic response from reviewers. We now hear him with Shostakovich’s unconventional Piano Concerto No. 1, whose unusual characteristic is its use of solo trumpet in a leading role next to the piano. On trumpet: Reinhold Friedrich, one of the most sought-after trumpeters of our time.
The program has been complemented by the famous String Quartet No. 8 in the arrangement for String Orchestra by Rudolf Baumgartner, and the Piano Prelude op. 87/1, both in the original version as well as in Baumgartner’s version
for string quartet.
