The Britannic Organ Vol. 3
Toccata and Fugue by Bach
In Memoriam Titanic
Funeral March (Chopin)
Excerpts from “Der fliegende Holländer” (Wagner)
and many other organ treasures as well as dance music, entertainment
and “cinematic accompaniment” from the huge 20th
century ocean liner
Diverse organists and original Welte-Philharmonie
music rolls
Volume 3 from the series of the Welte-Philharmonic-
Organ, which was originally built for the Britannic
ocean liner, is dedicated primarily to entertainment
on board a steamer.
But this recording also pays tribute to the sister
ship of the Britannic, the Titanic, which sank nearly
100 years ago in 1912. Among other things, we hear
compositions written specifically to commemorate
the tragedy. Curiously, a number of versions of Nearer
my God to thee are found here: this song was supposedly
heard once again on board the Titanic , after the
North Atlantic had already devoured large parts of the
ship.
