There is nothing unusual about a father and son dedicating
themselves to the same profession. Nor it is
uncommon in the field of art. In most cases, as with
Bach and Mozart, the successors are the ones who lose
out compared to their famous predecessors. Not so
in the case of Richard Strauss, who far outshines his
father, Franz Joseph Strauss, in posthumous fame,
although his father was once very important for the
budding composer’s education and served as a source
of inspiration for several of his son’s works. Franz Joseph
Strauss was one of the best hornists of his time.
OehmsClassics is delighted to make an important
contribution to the Richard Strauss Year 2014, together
with the solo hornist of the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie
Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern.
