Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 6 in A Minor
Philharmoniker Hamburg
Simone Young, conductor
Mahler’s Sixth Symphony was premiered by the Essen
Philharmonic in Essen on May 27, 1906. The composer
conducted the performance himself. Astonishingly,
he only led it two subsequent times: in 1906 in
Munich and in 1907 in Vienna.
The common nickname “Tragic Symphony” was
only officially used once (at the first performance in
Vienna) and then never again; it did not make its way
into published editions of the score.
The order of the two middle movements also poses
a riddle. At first, Mahler wanted to place the Scherzo
before the Andante, but then decided before the premiere
to change the order to Andante-Scherzo. But
when the famous conductor Wilhelm Mengelberg
asked Mahler’s widow about the correct order, she telegrammed
him the answer: “Scherzo – Andante”…
