The piano cycle op. 72 was written in Tchaikovsky’s
last year. Like a kaleidoscope, the sequence of 18
short, extremely technically demanding piano pieces
highlights the different musical styles of the 19th
century. Titles such as Un poco di Schumann and Un
poco di Chopin give clear indications of the composers
Tchaikovsky references here like a good colleague,
other allusions result solely from a musical gesture.
Poetry and virtuosity are unforgettably united by Igor
Kamenz in his new recording.
