Viktor Ullmann
Piano Concerto, Op. 25 (1939)
Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37
Herbert Schuch, piano
WDR Symphony Orchestra
Olari Elts, conductor
The Piano Concerto of Viktor Ullmann was composed
in 1939/40, during an extremely difficult yet productive
period prior to Ullmann‘s deportation to Theresienstadt
in 1942. In its tone, this Concerto appears
rough and ready over long stretches, giving the impression
of restlessly hectic energy. The dimensions are
compact: four movements take barely 20 minutes to
perform. The is no room for virtuoso display. This first
„orchestral CD“ by Herbert issued by OehmsClassics
is complemented by the Piano Concerto No. 3 of
Ludwig van Beethoven.
Herbert Schuch is also on tour with Beethoven’s
Piano Concerto No. 5, accompanied by the Brussels
Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Michel Tabachnik.
