      Gustav Mahler

      Symphony No. 1 in D Major (1884–1888)
      Gürzenich-Orchester Cologne
      Markus Stenz, conductor

While composing his fi rst symphony, Gustav Mahler was uncertain whether it should become a symphony or a symphonic poem. During fi rst performances, he tried to make it more palatable to audiences by entitling it and its movements. Th e subtitle “Titan”, which was sometimes used, for example, refers to the novel of the same name by Jean Paul. At the Hamburg performance in 1893, Mahler provided a completely workedout program, which he soon withdrew, however, realizing that it could completely lead the audience down the “wrong path”. Only after the work was printed in 1899 did it receive the four-movement form and regular title “Symphony No. 1” that we know today.
Th is CD is a live recording made from performances held in July 2011 at the Cologne Philharmonie.
